چکیده

Alloy segregation is believed to be an important factor in the growth of the wetting layer and subsequent formation of islands during heteroepitaxy. We report simulated annealing results that determine the lowestenergy configuration of a strained system. Our results indicate that in addition to vertical segregation, there is also an energetic driving force for lateral segregation and formation of subsurface features before island formation. We believe that these subsurface features play a crucial role in the nucleation of islands.

Atomistic Analysis of Phase Segregation Patterning in Binary Thin Films Using Applied Mechanical Fields

The patterned compositional evolution in thin films of a binary alloy controlled by modulated stress fields is studied by employing Monte Carlo simulations. General features of stress-patterned phase segregation are probed using a binary Lennard-Jones potential in which the lattice misfit between the two components of the alloy is varied systematically. In general, patterning of the microstruct...

Initiation and evolution of phase separation in heteroepitaxial InAlAs films

We have investigated the initiation and evolution of phase separation in heteroepitaxial InAlAs films. In misfit-free InAlAs layers, cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy ~XSTM! reveals the presence of isotropic nanometer-sized clusters. For lattice-mismatched InAlAs layers with 1.2% misfit, quasiperiodic contrast modulations perpendicular to the growth direction are apparent. Interesti...

First principles investigation of the activity of thin film Pt, Pd and Au surface alloys for oxygen reduction.

Further advances in fuel cell technologies are hampered by kinetic limitations associated with the sluggish cathodic oxygen reduction reaction. We have investigated a range of different formulations of binary and ternary Pt, Pd and Au thin films as electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction. The most active binary thin films are near-surface alloys of Pt with subsurface Pd and certain PdAu and PtAu ...

Anatomy of vertical heteroepitaxial interfaces reveals the memristive mechanism in Nb2O5-NaNbO3 thin films

Dynamic oxygen vacancies play a significant role in memristive switching materials and memristors can be realized via well controlled doping. Based on this idea we deposite Nb₂O₅-NaNbO₃ nanocomposite thin films on SrRuO₃-buffered LaAlO₃ substrates. Through the spontaneous phase separation and self-assembly growth, two phases form clear vertical heteroepitaxial nanostructures. The interfaces bet...

Preparation of heteroepitaxial LaNiO3 thin films on a SrTiO3 substrate for growing an artificial superlattice with RF sputtering

High-quality heteroepitaxial LaNiO3 (LNO) thin films were successfully grown on SrTiO3 (STO) substrates with RF-magnetron sputtering deposition at substrate temperatures in a range 150–650 ◦C. Azimuthal scans around the surface Bragg peak of the film and lattice images from a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) show that a well epitaxial relationship between film and substr...
